July 9th Picnic Report
By Christopher Rand (SIP Member)
SIP held its members' appreciation
picnic last July 9. It was in a marvelous setting, the warm foothill
area ofStevens Creek Park, in the shade of tangled oaks just beyond
an enormous cottonwood tree with nine welltrimmed trunks. In the
course of the afternoon a broad turnout of about fifty SIP members
and guests commingled in the pungent aroma of the chicken and hamburger
barbecue and feasted on various types of salad, grilled corn, pickles,
fruit and soft drinks as a range of the most popular recent Iranian
songs and dances played softly in the background. Though the picnic
was scheduled to begin around 1:30 most of those who came arrived
substantially later, having chosen first to watch the finals of
the World Cup (Italy defeated France in a penalty shootout, as
everyone will remember). Near the conclusion SIP's president Manijeh
Hosseini gave a welcoming address and renewed her call for enhanced
member participation in SIP's broad range of events, and several
of those in attendance offered additional comments, among other
things hoping that SIP would make greater efforts in the future
to bring in younger members of the local community. Meanwhile one
looks forward to more of these pleasant gatherings, perhaps as
pot-lucks with broad contributions from all those in attendance.

The Society of Iranian Professionals Presents:
Causes and Effects of Global Warming in the 21st Century
By Dr. Azadeh Tabazadeh
Speakers Bio:
Dr.Azadeh Tabazadeh ’s outstanding research and discoveries have made significant contributions to the field of atmospheric science and have made her a highly recognized member of the international science community. She immigrated to the United States in 1982.As a young girl she was fascinated by the wonders of chemical science and pursued her education in this field. She first came to the science community ’s attention through her graduate work in atmospheric science at UCLA under the supervision of Howard Reiss and Rich Turco where she explored the role of volcanic eruptions in injecting chlorine compounds into the stratosphere. The results of her research ended twenty years of debate about this subject. Dr. Tabazadeh earned her Ph.D. in physical science from UCLA in 1994 and began to work at the NASA Ames Research Center as a post-doctoral fellow. In 1997, she joined NASA as a Physical Scientist in the Atmospheric Physics Branch. Currently, she is an Associate Professor jointly with Geophysics and the Civil and Environmental Engineering Departments at Stanford University.
Dr. Tabazadeh ’s works have been revolutionary in the fields of geophysics, physical chemistry, and atmospheric science. She has written numerous research papers as the principal investigator, all of which have been published in prestigious science journals. In the cover story of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (2002,No.99), Dr. Tabazadeh presented for the first time the results of her research on the correlation between volcanic activity and the ozone hole, namely that if a period of high volcanic activity on Earth coincides with a series of cold winters in the Arctic, then a springtime Arctic ozone hole may reappear for a number of consecutive years. Her most recent work on the connection between ozone depletion and global warming is challenging widely held views in stratospheric science.
Dr. Tabazadeh is recipient of many awards including the American Geophysics Union ’s medal in 2001.She was the 1999 recipient of the “Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers.(This is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on outstanding scientists and engineers in their early career.) In the citation of this award, Dr. Tabazadeh is recognized for her pioneering development of theoretical techniques to simulate the formation of chemically and climatically important aerosol particles in the Earth ’s atmosphere. Dr. Tabazadeh works with a broad array of scientists, universities and scientific organizations such as UCLA, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Max Plank Institute, and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
